Planned page structure

Writer brief, not finished page copy: Myopia control means slowing how fast a child's minus power increases. Low-dose atropine drops, special myopia control spectacle lenses, myopia control contact lenses and ortho-k lenses can each slow progression, alongside about 2 hours of outdoor daylight a day. Add the line: Medically reviewed by Dr ___ [CONFIRM], MS (Ophth), DMC Reg. ___ on [date]; show 'Last updated' date that changes only with real edits.

Key facts at a glance

Writer brief, not finished page copy: Six one-line, quotable facts for AI answers and featured snippets: childhood myopia is rising in Indian cities; higher myopia raises lifelong risk of retinal detachment and glaucoma; low-dose atropine and myopia control lenses slow progression, they do not reverse it; outdoor time helps prevent onset; treatment needs 6-monthly checks; start early when power rises fast.

FAQs from the workbook

Can myopia in children be reversed?

No treatment reverses myopia once the eye has grown longer. Myopia control slows how quickly the minus power increases, which lowers the final power and the long-term risk of problems such as retinal detachment and glaucoma linked with high myopia. Glasses or contact lenses still correct the blur while control treatment works in the background.

What is low-dose atropine for myopia?

Low-dose atropine is a very dilute atropine eye drop, commonly 0.01% to 0.05%, used once at night. Studies such as LAMP show it slows myopia progression in many children with few side effects. It is different from the 1% atropine used for lazy eye. It must be prescribed and monitored by an eye doctor every 6 months.

Do myopia control glasses work?

Defocus spectacle lenses, such as DIMS or HAL designs, have been shown in trials to slow myopia progression in many children when worn full time. They look like normal glasses and suit children who do not want drops or contact lenses. They need correct fitting and reviews every 6 months to measure power and eye length.

At what age should myopia control start?

Usually between 6 and 14 years, when myopia tends to progress fastest. It is especially worth considering if power rises by 0.5 dioptre or more a year, if myopia started early, or if both parents are myopic. Your doctor measures power, and ideally eye length, to decide whether control is needed and which option suits your child.

How long does myopia control continue?

Typically until the mid to late teens, when progression naturally slows. The doctor reviews every 6 months, measuring glasses power and sometimes eye length, and may continue, switch or taper treatment based on the response. Stopping suddenly can lead to some rebound in progression, so changes are planned rather than abrupt.

Does outdoor play really help?

Yes. About 2 hours of outdoor daylight a day is linked to a lower risk of children developing myopia, likely because bright light affects eye growth. It is a simple, no-cost habit for every child. On Delhi's high-pollution days, time near bright windows or in well-lit indoor spaces is a reasonable partial substitute.

Is ortho-k safe for children?

Ortho-k can be safe with strict lens hygiene and regular checks, but overnight rigid lenses carry a small risk of corneal infection. It suits motivated families who can follow cleaning routines every day and attend frequent early follow-ups. Availability varies, so ask whether ortho-k is offered and suitable after a full eye examination.

Can my child have LASIK instead?

No. LASIK and other laser procedures are done only after glasses power has been stable for at least a year, usually after 18 to 21 years. Myopia control in childhood aims to keep the final power lower, which also makes future options, including laser correction, more suitable if your child wishes to consider them as an adult.

How much does myopia control cost?

Costs vary by method. Low-dose atropine drops are usually the least expensive per year, defocus spectacle lenses cost more upfront and need replacement as power changes, and specialty contact lenses or ortho-k cost the most. Market prices were not consistently published. See our fee schedule for Jain Eye's charges, including follow-up visits.

Does screen time cause myopia?

Long periods of near work and less outdoor time are linked to myopia. Screens are one part of near work, not the only factor, so reading and homework count too. Breaks every 20 minutes, holding devices at least 30 cm away, good lighting and about 2 hours of outdoor daylight a day all help.
