FAQs from the workbook

When should I see a retina specialist?

See a retina specialist if you have diabetes, sudden floaters or flashes of light, a shadow or curtain across your vision, straight lines that look wavy, or unexplained loss of vision. Sudden symptoms need a same-day visit. People with diabetes should have a dilated retina check at least once a year, even when vision feels normal.

Are eye floaters dangerous?

Most floaters are harmless age-related changes in the clear gel inside the eye. However, a sudden shower of new floaters, flashes of light or a curtain over part of your vision can signal a retinal tear or detachment. These symptoms need an urgent dilated eye examination, ideally the same day, to protect your sight.

How often should diabetics get a retina check?

Most people with diabetes should have a dilated retina examination at least once a year, and more often if retinopathy is already present, sugar control is poor or during pregnancy. Early diabetic retinopathy often causes no symptoms, so regular checks are the only way to find changes before vision is affected.

What is an intravitreal injection?

An intravitreal injection places medicine directly into the eye to treat conditions such as wet macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema and retinal vein occlusion. It is done in a clean procedure room under numbing drops and takes a few minutes. Most people feel pressure rather than pain, and a course of several injections is often needed.

Is retinal detachment an emergency?

Yes. Retinal detachment is an eye emergency and usually needs surgery within days to protect vision. Warning signs include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light and a shadow or curtain spreading across your vision. If you notice these, contact an eye hospital immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

What does an OCT scan show?

An OCT scan takes a detailed cross-section picture of the retina and optic nerve in a few minutes, without touching the eye. It helps doctors find macular swelling, holes, fluid and early glaucoma damage, and track how well treatment is working. The test is quick, and the fee is listed on our eye checkup page.

How much does a retina injection cost in Delhi?

The cost depends mainly on the medicine used. Bevacizumab is the lowest-cost option, ranibizumab and its biosimilars cost more, and aflibercept costs more again. Many patients need several injections over a year. See the fee table on this page for Jain Eye Hospital's per-injection charges, which are confirmed before treatment begins.

Can diabetic retinopathy be reversed?

Damage that has already occurred may not reverse fully, but laser treatment and injections can stabilise diabetic retinopathy and reduce swelling in the macula, which often helps vision. Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, along with regular retina checks, plays an important role in protecting your eyesight over the long term.

How long is recovery after vitrectomy?

Recovery after vitrectomy often takes several weeks. If a gas bubble is used, you may need to keep a particular head position for some days and must not fly or travel to high altitudes until it clears. Vision improves gradually as the eye heals. Your surgeon will give you a personal recovery and follow-up plan.
