FAQs from the workbook

Can squint be corrected in adults?

Yes. Adult squint can be aligned with surgery at any age, and prism glasses can help some cases of double vision. Adults commonly report better eye contact and appearance, and in some cases improved depth perception and less double vision after alignment. Surgery is planned after measurements, and adjustable techniques may be used where available.

What is the right age for squint surgery in children?

It depends on the type of squint. Some squints that start in infancy are operated in the first 1 to 2 years to support the eyes working together, while others are treated first with glasses and patching. The surgeon decides timing after repeated measurements, glasses correction and treatment of any lazy eye, because stable measurements give more predictable results.

Is squint surgery painful?

Children have general anaesthesia and adults have local or general anaesthesia, so there is no pain during surgery. Afterwards the eye feels scratchy and sore for a few days, which is relieved with prescribed drops and simple painkillers. Redness on the white of the eye is expected and fades over 1 to 3 weeks.

How much does squint surgery cost in Delhi?

In the Delhi market, squint surgery is commonly quoted around 30,000 to 60,000 rupees for one or two muscles, and up to about 1 lakh at large hospitals, depending on the number of muscles and anaesthesia. Single-hospital figures vary, so verify locally. See our fee table for Jain Eye's charges and what the package includes.

Can squint be treated without surgery?

Some squints can. Squint caused by long-sightedness often straightens fully with the right glasses, and convergence insufficiency responds to supervised exercises. Prisms help some adults with small deviations. Constant squints usually need surgery after glasses and patching have improved vision, because they correct the eye muscle position rather than the focusing.

Do squint exercises work?

Exercises help a specific problem called convergence insufficiency, where eyes struggle to turn in for near work, and some intermittent squints. They do not straighten a constant squint. Ask the orthoptist whether exercises suit your type, how long to continue them and how progress will be measured, rather than relying on online videos.

Will squint come back after surgery?

Most eyes stay aligned, but some patients need a second operation over time, especially with childhood squint, where the eyes continue to develop. Wearing prescribed glasses, completing lazy eye treatment and attending follow-up visits lower this chance. Your surgeon will explain the likelihood of a repeat procedure for your type of squint.

How long is recovery after squint surgery?

Most children return to school and adults to desk work within 3 to 7 days. Redness fades over 1 to 3 weeks. Avoid swimming, dusty places and eye rubbing for about 2 weeks, and use the drops as prescribed. Double vision can occur briefly in adults while the brain adjusts, and usually settles within days to weeks.

What is bhengapan?

Bhengapan is the Hindi term for squint, a condition where one eye turns in, out, up or down while the other looks straight. It can be constant or come and go. It is treatable at any age with glasses, patching, exercises or surgery. In children, early treatment also protects vision in the turned eye.

Is squint surgery covered by insurance?

Squint surgery done to treat double vision, restore binocular function or protect a child's vision is generally covered by insurance, subject to policy terms. Purely cosmetic cases may not be covered. Our team can check your policy, request pre-approval and explain the documents needed for cashless or reimbursement claims before surgery.

Will my child need glasses after squint surgery?

Often yes. Surgery repositions the eye muscles but does not correct refractive error such as long-sightedness or astigmatism. Glasses, and sometimes patching for lazy eye, continue to protect vision and keep the alignment stable. The glasses power is rechecked at follow-up visits, usually every 6 to 12 months.

Is squint surgery done on the eyeball?

Surgery is done on the muscles attached to the outside of the eyeball through a small opening in the clear surface layer (conjunctiva). The eye is not removed from its socket and there is no cut on the skin. Dissolvable stitches are used, and the redness on the white of the eye fades over a few weeks.
